Modern Foreign Languages

At St Mary's , pupils in Years 3–6 receive between 30 and 60 minutes of Spanish each week, in line with the National Curriculum for Languages at Key Stage 2.

Our curriculum is highly ambitious and sequenced to enable pupils to build a deep and secure understanding of vocabulary, grammar and cultural knowledge over time. Please see the overview for MFL below!

Spanish is taught by a specialist teacher who provides consistently high-quality instruction and ensures that learning is carefully adapted so all pupils can achieve exceptionally well. A rich variety of approaches, including structured speaking and listening, writing tasks, interactive games and songs, promotes high levels of engagement, confidence and fluency. We often welcome parents to support teaching in Spanish to bring language and culture to life.

As a result, pupils develop strong linguistic foundations that prepare them exceptionally well for further language study in Key Stage 3.
