English

In English lessons children develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Phonics skills are taught from the Early Years. This solid grounding in phonetic understanding is the base on which literacy skills are built throughout the school. The 'Read, Write, Inc." scheme is used from the Early Years to Year 2. In speaking and listening, children learn to speak effectively to different audiences, to listen, understand and respond appropriately to others. They participate in group discussions. In reading, children are taught to read with enjoyment a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. They are encouraged to search for meaning and reflect on what they have read. In writing, children are taught to spell, to use punctuation and grammar correctly, to have a fluent handwriting style and to write for a variety of purposes and audiences.
